AEDST stands for Australian Eastern Daylight Saving Time.
The proper names of Australia's time zones vary. But in international contexts they are often called Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST), Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) and Australian Western Standard Time (AWST), and Australian Central Western Standard Time (ACWST). In domestic contexts the leading "Australian" is often dropped in speech though the abbreviations remain.
Eastern Standard Time (AEST) is UTC+10 hours which is highlighted with light blue color in the map. During AEDST this becomes UTC+11 hours
The following forms part of Eastern Standard time from the corresponding Standard Time Acts
- Queensland - Standard Time Act 1894
- New South Wales - Standard Time Act 1987 No 149
- Australian Capital Territory - Standard Time and Summer Time Act 1972
- Victoria - Summer Time Act 1972
- Tasmania - Standard Time Act 1895
The choice to use daylight saving time or not is a matter for the individual states and territories. Queensland (AEST) does not change to DST. Officially, the change to and from DST takes place at 2:00 am local standard time (which is 3:00 am daylight saving time) on the appropriate Sunday. Start of day light saving time begins on first Sunday in October for New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania and ends in first Sunday in April.
